The history of Chinese furniture can be traced back to the Shang and Zhou Dynasty (15th century BC to 3rd century BC), when early signs of Chinese furniture could be seen in bronze utensils made then. However, it was only until Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD) that Chinese furniture reached its golden age. Through wide scale trading by sea, hard wood timber which was mostly available in south east Asia made its way to China. Combined with the craftsmanship of noble artisans, furniture that had both artistic and functional values was created.
In short, Ming style furniture has the following characteristics : Elegant and graceful lines in the right proportions; Structurally sturdy with intelligent use of joinery; Carefully selected wood material, emphasizing the beauty of grains and patterns; Reserved use of mouldings and carvings to accentuate the look; Metal work (such as handles and hinges) matches with the overall design. Starting from mid Qing dynasty (1736 AD), furniture has become over-ornate. Emphasis has been shifted to sumptuous carvings, in-lay of stones or pearl, and obsessive decorations. Elegance and simplicity gave way to splendor and massiveness. There are also certain motifs that unique in Qing style furniture - like the carved scrolls at the horse hoof feet.
Please note however that this is only a rough guideline. There is heavily carved Ming dynasty antique furniture, as is there simple lined Qing dynasty furniture made for vernacular household. To date a piece of antique furniture a combination of other factors including joinery techniques and patina study have to be used too. (IMix)
